{"id":375,"date":"2018-03-10T02:21:20","date_gmt":"2018-03-10T02:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.grabthisrecipe.com\/?p=375"},"modified":"2018-03-10T22:14:46","modified_gmt":"2018-03-10T22:14:46","slug":"old-fashioned-chicken-and-dumplings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grabthisrecipe.com\/index.php\/old-fashioned-chicken-and-dumplings\/","title":{"rendered":"Old-Fashioned Chicken and Dumplings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2.5 &#8211; 3lbs of chicken<br \/>\n2 celery stalks<br \/>\n2 medium carrots<br \/>\n8 cups water<br \/>\n2.5 tsp salt<br \/>\n.5 tsp black pepper<br \/>\n2 cups flour<br \/>\n.5 tsp baking soda<br \/>\n3 tablespoons vegetable shortening<br \/>\n3\/4 cup buttermilk<\/p>\n<p><strong>Directions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Place chicken, celery, and carrots in a Dutch oven; add water and 2 teaspoons of the salt.\u00a0 Bring to boil over high; cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until tender, about 1 hour.\u00a0 Remove chicken from broth, and let stand until cool enough to handle, about 15 minutes.\u00a0 Remove and discard skin and bone from chicken, and cut meat into bite-size pieces.\u00a0 Bring broth to boil over high; stir in pepper.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, combine flour, baking soda, and remaining .5 tsp of salt in a large bowl; cut in shortening with a pastry blender (or use your fingers) until mixture resembles coarse meal.\u00a0 Add buttermilk, stirring with fork until dry ingredients are moistened.\u00a0 Turn dough out onto a well-floured surface, and knead lightly 4-5 times.<\/li>\n<li>Pat dough to .5&#8243; thickness.\u00a0 Pinch off dough in 1.5&#8243; pieces, and drop into boiling broth.
